Homeopathic Progress Report
Hajj Medical Mission Dec 2006

1. Introduction: This year National Council for Homeopathy (NCH), Ministry of Health, Government of Pakistan recommended following five names for Hajj Medical Mission Dec 2006:

a. Homeopathic Dr. MAS ……...........…Province (Punjab)
b. Homeopathic Dr. Mutahir Abbasi (Federal Capital)
c. Homeopathic Dr. Abdul Rashid Khan (NWFP)
d. Homeopathic Dr. Zaheer Akhtar (Sindh)
e. Homeopathic Dr. Khaliq Hashmi (Baluchistan)

2. Training and Arrival at Makkah: Homeopathic Doctors were given training at Madinatul Hujjaj Islamabad on 13th to 15th November 2006. The homeopaths reached at Makkah Tul Mukarma in three different groups on scheduled flights at different interval of time.

3. Provision of Medicines: National Council for Homeopathy provided bulk of medicines for Hajj mission. It was deposited to Hajj Mission before departure. The Homeopathic Medicines, which were dispatched from Pakistan, were reached at Pakistan House Makka Tul Mukarma well in time and were further distributed in setting up homeopathic dispensaries in different sectors of Makka Tul Mukarma and Madina Munawara. Homeopaths were also provided homeopathic medicines by the officials from the Ex-Stock available at Pakistan House Makka Tul Mukkarma. These include wide range of potencies, placebo diskettes, plastic bags, emergency combinations and Bio-Chemic salts.

4. Duties: After reaching at Pakistan House Makkah Tul Mukarma. Homeopaths were detailed in three different homeopathic dispensaries. Two dispensaries were set up in Makkah Tul Mukkarma and for each dispensary one homeopath was detailed as homeopathic medical officer. One homeopathic doctor was given task to set up dispensary at Madina Munawara. He then went to Madina Munawara to carry out the task. These homeopaths performed their duties with utmost devotion, professional commitment and personal keen interest. The Homeopathic Doctors worked for eight hours to twelve hours in a day and provided homeopathic consultation to Hujjaj. When two more homeopaths were arrived at Makkah Tul Mukarma to join the group then duties time was reduced to 8 hours in a day.

5. Patients Consultation and Maintenance of Record: A suitable procedure was laid down to provide free and high-quality medicines with rational homeopathic consultation to Hujjaj (pilgrimages). All the patients were asked to approach to Homeopathic Doctors after getting Registration Slip with proper filling of Serial Number, Name and Passport Number at Reception, so that an accurate and genuine record could be maintained. It was the choice of Haji (Pilgrimage) to find what type of treatments he/she wants among the available options that is homeopathy, Herbal (Unani) or Allopathy. People were keen to take homeopathic medicines. Few were those who were carrying homeopathic prescription slips, which they brought from Pakistan.

6. Total Number of Patients: During the mission, above 14 to 15 thousands patients were given free Homeopathic treatment both at Makkah Tul Mukkarma and Madina Munawara. During rush hours, before Hajj 200 patients were given consultation in a day. Many Patients were given consultation and medicines without registration, being the reason that visited Hujjaj were unable to produce proper Hajj Identity Cards at the time of consultation. They visited Homeopathic dispensaries without having supportive documents even then Homeopathic Medicines were provided.

7. Indian Hajj Medical Mission: It is worth mentioning that in order to develop soft corner among the visited Haji's (Pilgrimage) of the other countries and the idea to follow “Serving of one Haji is equal to one Hajj”, free homeopathic medicines were also provided to them. These include many countries like Afganistan, Neighboring Russian States, Bungladesh, Saudi Arabia and India etc. The trend of Indian Hajj Pilgrimages was towards Pakistani Hajj Medical Mission, a fair number of Indian Haji’s visited Pakistani Homeopathic Dispensaries to take homeopathic medicines. In order to find the reason and to see the set up of Indian Hajj Medical Mission, a group of homeopaths headed by Dr. MAS visited Indian Hajj Medical Mission and enquired in detail about the set up. The Director Indian Hajj Medical mission briefed the group about the Indian Hajj Medical Mission; he told that no Indian Homeopath is included in the mission. The government of India only sends Allopathic Doctors in the mission. The officials do not consider the significance of homeopathy for the mission. Dr. MAS requested to the director to put suggestion to Ministry to include Indian Homeopaths in the next mission also.

8. Common Diseases: During the Hajj Season, Hujjaj/Patients with different set of symptoms / diseases were reported at homeopathic dispensaries. The list of the most common diseases is mentioned below:

Name of Diseases
Sinusitis,Fever – General, Apthae, Allergy – Sneezing, Allergy – Skin Itching, Stomach Pain, Mouth – Ulcer, Renal Colic, Prostatorrhea, Heart – Palpitation, Skin – Eczema, Muscular Pain – Calf, Rheumatic Complaints, Menses – Bleeding, Male - Sexual Weakness, adache, Catarrh, Tonsillitis, etc

9. Problem Faced: Although Director Hajj Medical Mission, Ministry of Hajj Affairs and other allied forces provided all possible assistance in the promotion and set up of Homeopathic dispensaries, but few discrepancies from the other staff were also faced by homeopaths. Anyway these minor stumbling blocks were the part of the job and Homeopathic Doctors very well adjusted themselves finally. The cooperation and assistance provided by the Director and Deputy Director Hajj Medical Mission is very well appreciated.

10. Briefing to Federal Ministers: A short briefing was given to Federal Minister of Hajj and Religious Affairs Mr. Ijaz Ul Haque on his visit at homeopathic dispensary set up at main hospital Pakistan House Makka Tul Mukarama. At Minnah Camp, during Hajj Days, Homeopathic Dr. MAS given detailed briefing to Federal Minister of Health, Mr. Muhammad Naseer Khan about the duties, conduct and performance of homeopathic doctors during Hajj Medical Mission. He appreciated the performance and directed to him to submit a detail report with supporting documents at his office so that alternative therapy may get its due share and status. A friendly talk was also done with Chief Minister of NWFP, Minister of Law, Leader of the Opposition Maulana Fazal Ur Rehman and other MPA & MNA’s and high dignitaries. This created empathetic relationship and few of them then consulted and visited the homeopathic dispensary for taking medicines.

11. Suggestion / Recommendation: It was observed that People have keen interest in Homeopathic and Alternative Therapies, to them allopathic medicines contain lot of side effects, that’s why they were rushed to Homeopathic and Unani dispensaries during Hajj Season. In few sectors of Makka Tul Mukkarma, no Homeopathic Dispensary was located; Hujjaj reached at main hospital in search of Homeopathic and Unani (Herbal) medicines after traveling a long distance. They also complained about this problem. Eight dispensaries were working in Makkah Tul Mukarma and five Dispensaries were working in Madina Munawara but among these dispensaries, only in four dispensaries Homeopathic Medicines were available. Due to over all performance during Hajj Medical Mission and Hujjaj keen interest in alternative therapies like Homeopathy and Unani, it is strongly recommended that for each dispensary at Makkah Tul Mukarma and Madina Munawara, atleast 13 Homeopaths, one Homeopath for one dispensary should be enrolled for the next Hajj Medical Mission 2007, so that people may get good quality treatment easily having no side effects.

12. Awards and Appreciations: Homeopathic Doctors assisted the Hajj Medical Mission for successful completion with full dedication and commitment. Dr. MAS not only attended patients in homeopathic dispensary and provided consultation but also given extra time for managing office works during Hajj Medical Mission.

Keeping in view of the over all best performance in promoting Homeopathic system during Hajj Medical Mission, the Director Hajj Medical Mission commended the services of all Homeopaths in the final meeting.

Many Saudi dignitaries and Pakistani officials consulted the homeopath for their treatment. His Excellency Sheikh Fowad Omar Instisar Azhar appointed Dr. MAS as his family physician and offered free visit to Saudi Arabia at any time. Commendations and Best performance were also awarded to him by different organizations in that short period. This shows his sense of responsibility. He in true sense proved to be a true ambassador of Pakistani Homeopaths.

The services rendered by Dr. MAS were applauded and appreciated at all level. The Director Hajj Medical Mission Pakistan issued him appreciation letter also.

At Madina Munawara, the Deputy Director Hajj Medical Mission also commended the services of homeopath by issuing a certificate of excellence. This is happened first time in the history of Hajj Medical Mission that a homeopath was awarded twice both at Madina Munawara and Makka Tul Mukkarma.

13. Completion Report: All homeopaths have returned back to Pakistan on 29th January 2007. A completion report has been submitted to National Council for Homeopathy Ministry of Health Government of Pakistan with all supporting documents.

Thanks to Almighty Allah for successful completion of Hajj Medical Mission!

History of Homeopathy In India

Homeopathy in India

Homeopathy came to India as early as 1810 when some German physicians and missionaries came to Bengal and started distributing homoeopathic remedies. Dr. John Martin Honigberger was the first person who is recognised to have brought homeopathy and the name of Hahnemann to India. Dr. Honigberger arrived at Lahore in 1829 - 30. The then ruler of Punjab, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, was impressed by him when he treated his favorite horse of its bad leg ulcers.

In 1835 he traveled to Paris and met Dr. Hahnemann. He bought a large quantity of homoeopathic medicines from Hahnemann's Pharmacist, Lehmann of Kothen. In his second visit to India, in the year 1839, he treated Maharaja Ranjit for paralysis of vocal cords and oedema. The Maharaja was relieved of his complaints and in return received valuable rewards and later on was made officer-in-charge of a hospital. Dr. Honigberger later on went to Calcutta and started practice there. This royal patronage helped the system to have its roots in India.

Homeopathy continued to spread and Indians found in its philosophy and principles, a reflection of their belief and culture. A large number of missionaries, amateurs in Indian civil and military service personals practiced Homoeopathy extensively and spread this system mostly in Bengal and South India. Surgeon Samuel Brooking, a retired Medical Officer had the courage and conviction to establish a Homoeoapthic Hospital at Tanjore, in South India, in 1847. There have been a number of other well-known enthusiasts like Dr. Cooper and Dr. J. Ruther ford Russel, two Government Medical Officers, Mr. H. Ryper, a military pensioner, Captain May and others of Calcutta, made Homeopathy popular among the masses of Bengal. Last but not the least, was the services rendered by Dr. C. J. Tonnere, M.D. the French Homoeopath, proved "Acalpha Indica" in the year 1851 was first Health Officer of the town of Calcutta and later he established Homoeopathic Hospital.

In 1861, a virulent epidemic of malarial fever was raging over lower Bengal and it was at this juncture that the great philanthropist, Late Babu Rajendra Lall Dutta, a layman, truly laid the foundation of Homeopathy and started its practice with astounding results. He converted the redoubtable allopath and his opponent, Dr. Mahendra Lall Sircar, M.D. D.L., C.I. E. to Homeopathy. Dr. P.C. Majumdar, M.D. another Homoeopath of Calcutta started his practise in 1864 and laid the foundation of Calcutta Homoeopathic Medical College in 1885.

Homoeopathy continued to spread and by the beginning of 20th century most of the important cities in India had Homoeopathic dispensaries. The popularity of the system led to a mushroom growth of quacks practicing Homoeopathy. Seeing this deplorable state of affairs, efforts were made by the Government. It took several steps and in 1948, a Homoeopathic Enquiry Committee was set up to evolve a suitable arrangement to regulate teaching and practice of Homoeopathy. A Homoeopathic Advisory Committee was appointed in 1952 by the Govt. of India and the recommendations of these committees led to passing of a Central Act in 1973 for recognition of this system of medicine. Homoeopathy now has been accepted as one of the National Systems of Medicine in India.

Uniform Education in Homeopathy at diploma and graduate level was enforced in the country in the year 1983. In 1978 separate Central Council for Research in Homeopathy established. Now Post-graduate courses in homeopathy are also available.

At present( 2008 ) there are nearly 186 homeopathic medical college in India. Approximately 35 are government colleges, rest are managed by private bodies. Homeopathy is the third most popular method of treatment in India, after Allopathy and Ayurveda. It is estimated that there are about quarter million homeopaths in India. Nearly 10,000 new ones add to this number every year. The legal status of homeopathy in India is very much at par with the conventional medicine.

Spread of Homeopathy In UK & USA

The Spread of Homeopathy

In the UK, homeopathy was established by Dr Frederick Quin (1799-1878) at around 1827 (Two Italian homeopathic doctors (Drs Romani and Roberta) had been employed two years previously by the Earl of Shrewsbury, but had quickly returned to Naples as they could not tolerate the damp English climate.) Quin contracted cholera in 1831 while travelling in Moravia, and attributed his cure to his use of the homeopathic remedy Camphor.
*
Quin, allegedly the illegitimate son of the Duchess of Devonshire, had excellent social connections, and homeopathy soon became the preferred treatment of the upper classes: the Dukes of Edinburgh and Beaufort were among Quin's patients, and he became physician to the Duchess of Cambridge. At its peak in the 1870s, there were large hospitals in Liverpool, Birmingham, Glasgow, London and Bristol [16]; the Bristol hospital was funded by the W.D. & H.O. Wills tobacco family, while the 'Hahnemann Hospital' in Liverpool was built by members of the Tate family of sugar importers, who also funded the Tate Gallery in London.
*
The primary reason that homeopathy became popular in the 19th century was the remarkable results that homeopathic physicians experienced in treating people suffering from the infectious disease epidemics that raged at the time. [10] [11] Epidemics of cholera, scarlet fever, typhoid, and yellow fever were rampant and killed large numbers of people who became ill with them. And yet, death rates in homeopathic hospitals were commonly one-half or even one-eighth of the death rates in the conventional medical hospitals.
*
From the very beginnings of homeopathy, its claims were treated with skepticism by the medical and scientific establishments. Sir John Forbes (1787-1861), physician to Queen Victoria, declared in 1861 that most cases of disease which recover under homeopathy "recover by means of the curative powers of Nature alone." He concluded that homeopathy is "one of the greatest delusions...of the healing art" and the only good it brings is by lessening "the monstrous polypharmacy which has always been the disgrace of our art - by at once diminishing the frequency of administration of drugs and lessening their dose." Professor Sir James Young Simpson said, of the highly diluted drugs, that there is "no poison, however strong or powerful, the billionth or decillionth of which would in the least degree affect a man or harm a fly."

Homeopathy came to India with Dr Martin Honigberger (1795-1869) in 1829-30. India now has the largest homeopathic infrastructure in the world, with 300,000 qualified homeopaths, 180 colleges, 7500 government clinics, and 307 hospitals, and 10% of the population are estimated to use homeopathy exclusively for their medical needs. [13]

Homeopathy was brought to the USA by Dr Hans Burch Gram (1787-1840) in 1825 and became popular there partly because of the excesses of conventional medicine, partly because of the impressive results it experienced in the treatment of infectious disease epidemics of the day, and partly by the influence of Constantine Hering (1800-1880). Hering immigrated to America in 1833 and became known as the 'father of American homeopathy' due to authoring textbooks for practicing homeopaths as well as books for the general public on how to use homeopathic medicines in home care Hering's contributions to the theory of homeopathy include his "laws" of cure. He proposed that healing proceeds (and symptoms disappear):

From above downwards.
From within outwards.
From a more important organ to a less important one.
In the reverse order of their coming.

Homeopathy In US

By 1900, hardly any city in the USA with a population of more than 50,000 was without a homeopathic hospital, but in the 1930s, the popularity of homeopathy waned, partly due to the Flexner Report of 1910, which led to the closure of virtually all medical schools teaching alternative medicine, and by the 1950s, homeopathy had almost disappeared. Nevertheless, in 1995 sales of homeopathic remedies were estimated at US$201 million, and the number of homeopaths increased from less than 200 in the 1970s to about 3,000 in 1996.

Till today Homeopathy has been in existence for almost two centuries. Ever since its discovery Homeopathy has flourished all over the world. In Europe especially in Germany, where it originated, England, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Austria and other European countries, Homeopathy is not uncommon. Likewise it has flourished in Latin America especially in Brazil and Argentina where it has ever gained recognition by their respective governments since the very early days. It has also spread to other American countries.

Over times, Homeopathy has penetrated into Asia such as India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and further south to Australia. For after 127 years Homeopathy finally reached Malaya in 1940's.

It has almost been half a century now that Homeopathy being existence in Malaysia. Over the period only a fraction or our population really knows what is Homeopathy is all about. The process of disseminating information about homeopathy those days was rather slow.

Homeopathy in Malaya was said to be brought here by the Colonel A.S. Rajah, a British Army Officer who later spread the new idea to Mr Burhanuddin Al Helmy. Mr Burhanuddin later went to India to study Islamic Religious Theologies and while at India he suffered from bronchial asthma, who later cured with homeopathy treatment.

While studying religion theologies, he started study homeopathy and qualified both subjects at the same time. He came back to Malaysia in early 40's and started propagating homeopathy, That is the first time, homeopathy were ever mentioned among the Malay society. Dr Burhanuddin Helmy started teaching homeopathy in a class of 15 students at Gunong Semanggol Arabic School. Among them were late Dr Dali Muin, Dr Mohd Noor Nordin, Dr Ghazali Mahmood, Dr Hashim. and later came late Dr Mohammed Yaacob and Dr Hj Abd Hamid Baba.

In 1960 some of these students united to form a homeopathic society by the name of Persatuan Homeopathy Malaysia with the headquarter at Taiping, Perak and later came another Persatuan Homeopathy Bumiputra at Johor Baharu,

A Landmark The Spread of Homeopathy In MalaysiaIV>

In 1977 Dr Nik Omar bin Haji Nik Daud, a young professional who qualified homeopathy at Pakistan Homeopathy Homeopathy Medical College in 1975 and further his education at London, UK came back to Malaysia in 1977 and started a first complete Homeopathic Clinic right in the heart of his home town, Kota Bharu, Kelantan.

Although homeopathy was little known and widely misunderstood at this time, the cures brought by Dr Nik Omar through his homeopathic prescription won much acclaim for Homeopathy for Homeopathy.

In 1979 with seven students, Dr Nik Omar began teaching homeopathy, thus laying the foundation of the first ever homeopathic college in Malaysia with the name of 'The Faculty of Homeopathy Malaysia' When started the Advance Diploma in Homoepathy- ADHom. was a three years course. In 1990 the course was upgraded to 4 years Diploma in Homeopathy System - DHMS. In year 2000 when a group of Ministry of Health Malaysia came and inspect the college, a long discussion was held at Kota Bharu and with the advise form Minsitry of Health, we lift up the course at par with other homeopathic institution world wide with a five years - Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine - BHMS.

Today Faculty of Homeopathy Malaysia is well respected by all admire of homeopathy throughout the world. Student all over the world are still coming to do various courses such as M.F.Hom. MDHom, Diploma in Acupuncture, Cupping, Naturopathy, Reflexology, etc.

"With 11.5 acres of college compound, it is considered as one of the biggest and only homeopathic and complementary organization in Asean ," says Cindy Tham, The Sun Newspaper July 26, 1998

" Dr Nik Omar has written hundreds of articles about his work in local and oversea newspaper and magazines. His is too bullish. Both his colleagues and rival acknowledge his tremendous energy. All recognise that he, more than anyone, is responsible for raising the medicine's profile in Malaysia," says Allison Nidel, A British Correspondent.

Letter Dated: 15.9.1988
.

Dear Dr Nik Omar

Thank you for your letter dated 2oth August 1988, I have subsequently also read about your letter on Homeopathy in Malaysia in the proceeding of the Athens Congress. I wish you had come there personally. I was a very good Congress. As you already have a contact with LHMI it would be mutually beneficial if you and your friends join the organisation. For this purpose you may write to the new Secretary General or the Treasurer at the addresses given below.

From your article I have a clear picture of the state of Homeopathy and the organisations in Malaysia. Although the proceedings were received in Athens but there is one so busy with the scientific sessions that I had not read this articles then.

I am impressed by your activities and particularly if you have been able to get some recognition for Homeopathy from the Government. Even though such recognition is not complete but if the Government bodies sponsored your programmes that is itself starts the process.

Looking forward to opportunities of meeting and cooperation in future and with best wishes for your work in promoting homeopathy.

Yours sincerely
Dr Diwan Harish Chand 15.9.1988.

Reported by Dr Nik Omar.

After receiving the letter from Dr Diwan Harish Chand, Dr Nik Omar has proceed to meet Dr Chands son Dr Vijay Harish Chand at New Delhi, India, who was the Vice President of LHMI India and managed to form International Homeopathic Medical League Malaysian Chapter in 1989 and Dr Nik Omar was the first Vice President.

In year 2000 the Vice President of LHMI for Malaysia goes to Dr Azizan Ismail and when Dr Azizan passed away in 2006 the seat of Vice President was vacant.

Message from Mr PMS Malik, The High Commissioner For India 1989

Message From Mr P.M.S. Malik, The High Commissioner For India 1989
I consider it a great honour to be called upon to convey a message for the 2nd Congress of the Asian Homeopathic Medical League to be held from 4 - 6th November 1989 at Kuala Lumpur.

2. Homeopathy occupies a special place in India. It is believed that the Principles of this great science were expounded by the ancient Indian in tenth century B.C. Subsequent mention of the Principle's was made by Hippocrates and Paracelsus in 400 B.C. and in sixteenth century by a German physician, Samuel hahnemann.

It goes to Hahnemann's credit, as one who was undoubtedly familiar with these writings, to test the principle and establish them as the cornerstone of this system of medicine.

3. The use of the natural laws of healing and medicines made from natural substances - animal, vegetable and mineral - have given homeopathy a place along with Allopathy, Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani System of Medicine. The Central Government Health Schemes of the Government of India, use Homeopathy along with the other system of medicine, in its dispensaries and hospital in different part of country.

4. I take this opportunity to wish the 2nd Congress of Asian Homeopathic Medical League all success.
